The Island Scrimshander

After creating and selling his scrimshaw to his older brother Dan for two years, Gary Kiracofe opened up the Island Scrimshander on Mackinac Island's main street in 1979. The business grew, and Gary increased the size of his shop from a tiny 70 square feet to approximately 250 square feet. In 1994, the Scrimshanders moved across the street to its present location in the lobby of the Chippewa Hotel.

The Island Scrimshander is open from Mother's Day
through October, seven days a week and displays scrimshaw by both the Kiracofe brothers, as well as other artists around the country. Items can be ordered during the off-season through Gary's second location in Door County, WI.
