Scrimshanders International Scrimshaw Competition began in the Mystic store in June of 2002. Barbara Cullen, owner of Mystic Scrimshanders, began the event to educate the public about Scrimshaw around the world and also to help support this old art form. It is currently the only competition of its kind in the United States.
This year's opening night was a wonderful mix of art, music and good food. Many artists and collectors attended and eveyone agreed it was one of the best shows we have ever had.
The judges had a hard decision in choosing this years winners. In most cases it came down to a tenth of a point.
The overall winner, taking both Best of Show and the Open Category, was Linda Karst Stone for her beautiful piece "Menagerie Carousel". B/W Nautical went to Salmon Rashidi for his "Whaling Bark Ocean Rover", B/W Wildlife was Terry Christian for "Siberian Tigers"on his spectacular Siberian Ice Ivory tusk, Portrait went to Gary Williams for his "Gloucester", Color Nautical was taken by Sandra Brady for her outside of the box piece "Dangerous Waters", and finally Color Wildlife went to Matt Stotthart for his piece "Elusive Cat".
During the 2 weeks the competition was up almost 300 people voted for their choice for the People's Choice Award. In spite of the large number of voters, we came down to a tie between David Smith's "Moonshadow" and Salmon Rashidi"s "Sailing Day, Whaling Bark Ocean Rover". Congratulations to all of this years winners! It was a great show.
